Songs of Varen
The Feyrwaalds is a system of villages scattered across the northern mountains. Inhabited by Aldecs, each village is run by an Ettha, a wise woman who communes with ancestor spirits and whose advice is heeded as law by the residents. Large cattle and oxen, sheep and rams, and chickens roam the villages, domesticated. The rivers that run through the Feyrwaalds are deep and strong, the water icy cold and fresh from the peaks. The largest villages are Fess, Evvec, Ceda, and Relaan.
Many of the villages in this land function on unwritten codes that the natives simply “know as truth”. One of the Ettha is said to have once said, “Spirit is our ink and body is our parchment.” and this phrase, accompanied by a calm shrug, is occasionally quoted to justify the loose and unlawful appearance of their society to outsiders.
Druids and clerics (typically of the Nature and Knowledge domains) are revered here, but other magics, even the supernatural abilities of the monk and paladin, are viewed with suspicion, if not outright aggression. The folk of these lands live tough lives, and magic makes everything more complicated. Besides, it’s the antagonistic force in all of their folktales and bedtime stories.
